as well as for the kidnappings of journalist Gustavo Gorriti and the businessman Samuel Dyer.
Furthermore, this ruling restores the dignity of the victims in sustaining that they were not linked to any terrorist organisation.
We would also like to congratulate the Judiciary for its fair and just handling of the trial of Fujimori, and in particular for its impartiality to due process and the rights of all parties involved.
This is a pivotal moment for Peru, for Latin America and for the whole world. For the first time a former head of state has been extradited to his home country to face trial and be found guilty as the indirect author of crimes against humanity. The significance of this trial is unquestionable, both on the national level, for the victims and families of victims of the Barrios Altos and La Cantuta massacres, as well as on the international level, for the precedent it sets for other countries where political leaders are accused of crimes against humanity.
In addition, the PEP would like to highlight the significant number of other cases of human rights violations which have yet to be addressed by the judiciary system. The Peru Europe Platform hopes that the Peruvian government will take the excellent example of the Fujimori case, in particular the transparent and just way in which it was handled, as a model for these other human rights cases. As the TRC pointed out in its final report, justice and the establishment of the truth of what happened during the period of violence are crucial to the consolidation of democracy in Peru, and will help to repair the faith of the Peruvian population in the judiciary system. Therefore we urge the Peruvian government to make these cases a priority and to provide all of the necessary information and fully cooperate in any investigations.
Finally, PEP reaffirms its solidarity with the victims and the families of victims involved in the Barrios Altos and La Cantuta cases, and also with all the victims and their families who suffered violations of their most basic human rights during Peru's twenty-year internal armed conflict.
The Peru Europe Platform (PEP) is a network of European civil society organisations working to raise awareness on human rights and development issues in Peru at EU and member state level and to coordinate advocacy activities in conjunction with Peruvian partner organisations. The PEP promotes the implementation of the TRC's recommendations.
